Steuben Glass is an American glass manufacturer founded in 1903 by American Thomas Hawkes, and Englishman Frederick Carder, both with prior success in glass design and production.

Carder earned international prizes for his glass designs, leading the company to commercial success during the first 30 years of its existence. The Great Depression weighed heavily on the company which found new leadership and design inspiration which focused heavily on sculpted clear crystal led by Arthur Houghton Jr.

Thus Steuben glass is often seen as having two notable phases - the Carder era, and the Houghton era, each style of glass having avid followers and collectors.

While fans and art students may disagree, Carder as a court expert on art, testified that neither his nor Rene Lalique's glass were true art because they were largely manufactured wares.
