Memoir of the Life and Medical Opinions of John Armstrong

This very rare, but still published work, is a biography and medical review of Dr John Armstrong (1784-1829) who was a leading authority and expert on fevers and plagues. The first volume was published in 1833, while the second volume, which we are offering, was published in 1834.

Equally interesting is the inscription hand written on one of the blank end sheets reading:

The Editor of the Westminster Review With the compliments of the publisher.

The Westminster Review was published from 1823-1914, having been founded by Jeremy Bentham. In 1834, the year of this volume's publication, the famed philosopher John Stuart Mill was publisher. It is thusly our opinion that this book was submitted to Mill as a publicity generator for Boott's newly published memoir.

Book is octavo, quarter leather bound. Condition defects include:

  • Binding frayed and exposed at spine
  • Cover heavily worn on front, and less on back
  • the front marbled end paper is detached
  • Page toning and some very light foxing
  • Ex-library George Mears, M.D. Memorial Medical Library with library label on front cover

The binding is solid without being overly strong; pages are generally clean. The inside is in better condition than cover. The inside covers have marbled papers. Despite all of its warts, this is a great book.
